Day 19 - Dec 3 REST DAY

Today was the much needed rest day.
We are in the city of Copan Ruinas, the site of an ancient Mayan settlement.  I went to visit the site which was a short Tuk Tuk ride from the city center where we are staying.  It was amazing to see the structures and scope of this.  It dates back to centuries BC.  The civilization had to be impressive to have seen.  It is impressive today when it is in ruins let alone when it was a thriving cultural and economic center.  They were a very advanced civilization.
Here are some if the photos of the ruins...

It is amazing to see...
There was a re enactment of a Mayan celebration in the town square this evening that was a treat to see.  It was a ceremony to start a lacrosse like competition.  The Mayan priest asked for the blessing of the gods.  He then set the ball to play in a ceremonial vessel where it was set on fire.  They played in a small arena in the middle of the square.  At times the ball of fire went into the seated crowd and the kids would scream and run.  It certainly didn't conform to any safety standards that we know of.  But it was a riot to watch.

Tomorrow we are back on the bike and will be crossing into Guatamala and leaving Honduras.  We will be in Guatamala for two weeks before heading to Belize our last country.
